Almost every organization has asked us at one time or another, “how long do we have to keep our documents?”

Proper maintenance of your historical records and documents is very important to protect your organization. Electronic copies are normally IRS compliant as well, but make sure you have those electronic documents backed up and off-site.

Having a functioning Record Retention Policy is important and believe it or not, it is sometimes important not to “over-retain” your documents.  Holding onto something too long can create a security risk. Not holding onto a record long enough can be a legal or financial risk. The IRS has rules about retention as well.
