What is stewardship?

When you think of stewardship, what comes to mind? For your church, it is probably thinking about using the resources – financial, human and material – well and to the glory of God.
Stewardship is managing God’s blessings God’s way for God’s glory. Psalm 24:1 tells us that He owns it all, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fulness thereof” (KJV). So, we are just the “managers” of what He provides us.
So how is your church managing? Are you managing the talents and time of your church body well? Are you managing your financial resources well? Are you treating it all with the respect and faithfulness that the Lord will one day ask you to account?
The first century church shared it all. They took care of one another. And the apostles realized they needed to appoint certain persons to take care of the day to day material needs and administration of the resources they had.
We live in a more complicated world. Or perhaps we just make it more complicated, I’m not sure some days. But we are still called to tithe and support the church. The church is called to use these resources well. Part of doing so means budgeting, spending and then accounting for these resources well.
Tools available today for literally pennies per day, make doing this part of our stewardship easily, more efficiently and with transparency and layers of security that we have not had before. Why is this important? I will write more about this in my next blog: Good Stewardship: What that looks like.
